A Life Well Lived - Dewey Taylor | 7”x 5” | Greeting Card

When I got together with Dewey Taylor to paint his portrait, he was 94 years of age. We met in his family home on a sunny day with lovely natural light coming through the windows. Dewey shared stories of his life and I listened.

Dewey was raised in Arizona. As a young teen he got a job at an auto mechanic’s shop. One of his duties had him driving a red three wheel motor bike to deliver statements to clients and collect payments.

On one occasion back at the shop there was a shortage in the funds. The boss accused Dewey of taking the money and was going to fire him. However, his older brother who also worked there insisted that Dewey would never do such a thing. So they set a trap and caught the bookkeeper taking money.

Dewey set his standards high, and stuck to his moral code.
I found him to be too visually beautiful not to paint. The nicks taken from his ear were to remove cancers. His skin tones and look of determination inspire me. This image lets us really see the man.
