Sugar & Spice | 30”x 30” | Oil on canvas

This irrepressible young girl, Margaret, lived a few row house doors down from my family in Clifton Heights, PA. west of Philly. Each of these row houses had front steps like this, which served two front doors.
 
Margaret is, as the rhyme goes, a little girl made of sugar and spice and everything nice, with a little extra dose of spice. She and our daughter Emma were playmates. We liked her very much.

I couldn’t resist painting this image of Margaret with its intriguing compositional elements of shape and shadow.
