Roller Skates (greeting card)

Roller Skates | 7”x 5” | Greeting Card

In a day when kids wore leather soled shoes, these skates offered the first taste of wheel’d freedom. Using a Skate key, you could tighten these babies to your shoe soles in the front, and strap them around your ankle in the back.

Although scraped knees and hands were common, no head gear was worn, kid helmets had not yet been invented. Kids were tough, determined, bruised and sometimes bloody. Real fun!

Skate keys were often lost, so parents tied shoelaces through them and hung them around our necks. Often there were only one pair of skates and numerous kids, so we learned to share. Sometimes two kids would each wear one skate and sort of hop-skate along. The length and width were adjustable to fit any kids shoes.

The painting offers a loose, open, contemporary feel, while providing detailed realism. A nice combination.
