L.I.F.E. (Light, Irrigation, Flora, Earth) | 40”x 30” | Oil on Canvas

Hard working men, women and children of the American West know the realities of life represented in this dynamic painting of a Wheel Line, watering field crops. Long hard hours, sweaty bodies, calloused hands, and good honest hearts bring the bread and meat of life to our tables.

This scene is on Clawson’s hill just behind my wife’s family home at sunrise. The dynamic interaction of light and dark are active in this morning landscape. Using broad brush strokes, and loosely blended colors, I painted the sky before painting the clouds. This created a visual impression of the clouds floating in the air between us and the sky.

The darker values and visual weight of the pipe connection provide a powerful contrast to the seemingly endless rings leading us into the light of the coming sun. The various textures and atmospheric effects help us see, and almost feel, the moisture laden air, the water pouring down over the pipe's surface, and, the coarseness of the field grass.
