Two Tops (greeting card)

Two Tops | 7”x 5” | Greeting Card

As kids, my friends Johnny, David, Brooks and I played and competed with our tops. To get a good spin, the tops had to be held upside down with the tip pointing up. It was challenging to get a tight, well wound string together with a hard throw and perfectly timed pull back to get a “just right” smooth, long lasting spin. When you jerked back on the throw, the top would flip upright and hit the ground spinning.

These two tops have been well played with. You can tell from the worn and chipped paint as well as the worn plastic tip on the blue top. The tops are oversized in the painting which caused the string to seem more like I was painting a rope. I enjoy painting oversized things, especially things like this with the wear and tear of human use evident on them. I love the nicks, dings and patina.
